The first annual Riggins Steelhead Derby along the Salmon River is now underway.
Running now through March 29, 2008, the derby is for any non-native steelhead caught on the main Salmon River between the confluence with the South Fork of the Salmon and the confluence with the Snake River, and also includes the Little Salmon River.
Entry tickets are $5 per day and must be purchased before fishing. The steelhead derby is a "jackpot-style" derby. With every ticket bought, the pot grows until the end of the contest on March 29, 2008.
Place prizes will be awarded at the end of the contest, but there are also ongoing prize drawings throughout the season.
The first-place winner will be awarded 50 percent of the derby earnings; second place is $500 in cash, and the third-place winner will take home a G. Loomis spinning rod, a $330 value.
To participate in this event, anglers must purchase a ticket, land a non-native steelhead, and take the uncleaned hatchery fish and ticket to Hook, Line & Sinker in Riggins before 7 p.m.
Mondays through Saturdays and before 5 p.m. on Sundays to record the fish.
For those who would rather release their hatchery steelhead, photos can be submitted for the photo award. Wild fish are not part of this contest.
In addition to the tackle shop, tickets may be purchased at most Riggins businesses including restaurants, hotels, gas stations, grocery stores and from fishing outfitters.
